STEM AVIATION and AEROSPACE - MWVCTC's newest program!!
Did you know that 790,000 new pilots will be needed in the world by 2037, based on Boeing’s Pilot and Technician Outlook? Ironically, the number of pilot certificates issued by the Federal Aviation Administration has decreased more than 60 percent since 1980. This mismatch of supply and demand presents a tremendous opportunity for students in aviation careers that they may not have previously considered. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), the world’s largest aviation community, has crafted an aviation STEM curriculum for high schools across the country. The program is the first of its kind, offering students comprehensive four-year aviation study options that are aligned to rigorous math and science standards used nationwide. These courses are part of two career and technical education (CTE) pathways: pilot and unmanned aircraft systems (drones).
Launching Into and Exploring Aviation and Aerospace: This first-level course will provide the foundation for advanced exploration in the areas of flying, aerospace engineering and unmanned aircraft systems. Students will learn about engineering practices, problem-solving and the innovations and technological developments that have made today’s aviation and aerospace industries possible. Students will also gain a historical perspective, starting from the earliest flying machines and leading to a wide variety of modern aircraft and the integral role they play in making today’s world work. It is designed to give students a clear understanding of career opportunities in aviation and aerospace and the critical issues affecting the industry. This class will work closely with the Eastern Slope STEM Aviation Committee and its flying club which will provide mentorships and flight training opportunities for students. Please note: AOPA Levels II, III, and IV will be offered in subsequent years. By the 11th grade year, students will be able to select one of two pathways as mentioned above.

Advisory Committee
Advisory committees serve the CTE programs by acting as liaison between the educational institution and the public. The principal purpose for CTE program/advisory committees is to promote greater cooperation between career and technical education and the private sector in preparing individuals for employment, promoting quality career and technical education and making the career technical education system more responsive to the labor market.
CTE program/advisory committees have three major roles. They are to advise, assist and provide support and advocacy for quality career and technical education. It is through these roles that CTE program/advisory committees work with instructors and administrators to initiate policies, procedures and methods that help strengthen and modernize career and technical education.
Improving the quality of career and technical education can be directly linked to the degree of involvement, participation and commitment of the CTE program/advisory committees. If you would like to be involved in shaping the future of education at MWVCTC and have the skills/background to benefit the Aviation & Aerospace Program, please email ??? for more information.
