This course explores the field of outdoor recreation, beginning with the evolution of our relationship with the outdoors through history, and moves to challenges and opportunities facing the industry today.  Students will delve into career pathways and related professions that are in, for, and about the outdoors.


Students will be expected to read and engage with historical and contemporary texts, research and present on topics related to outdoor recreation, and learn, practice, and instruct specific outdoor skills.  Examples of such skills include self-care in the outdoors, Leave No Trace conservation ethics and techniques, orienteering and backcountry navigation, accident prevention and first aid, risk management, topics in outdoor leadership, and technical skills that transfer across multiple disciplines. 


Students can expect to spend time outside during class, playing, learning, and immersing themselves in the outdoors environment.
