Students in the Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) program have been actively engaging in hands-on learning experiences, thanks to innovative partnerships with local businesses and organizations. These real-world opportunities allow students to explore potential career paths while gaining valuable skills.

One of the standout programs this year is the Journalism ELO, marking its second year of collaboration with The Conway Daily Sun. Student journalist Joseph DellaValla has already published his first article, focusing on the Valley’s vibrant music scene. His work highlights both local talent and the cultural significance of music in the community.

The medical field is also attracting student interest, with three aspiring healthcare professionals—Pheona Troon, Lillian Killourie, and Elizabeth Krosson—participating in a job shadowing experience at Maine Health at Memorial Hospital. Their firsthand exposure to hospital operations and patient care was so rewarding that efforts are already underway to expand similar opportunities in the future.

Another exciting addition to the ELO program is a partnership with The Conway Historical Society. Student intern Hailey Boynton has been working on archiving historical artifacts, an experience that aligns with her passion for archaeology. This hands-on role provides her with insight into preservation techniques and historical research, setting a strong foundation for her future studies.

Beyond these specialized experiences, the ELO program has welcomed several new community partners, including Again and Again Farmstead, Tierney Electric, Gordon T. Burke, GE Brown, MacLean Precision, and LA Drew. These businesses join an already impressive list of local organizations dedicated to supporting student learning through internships, job shadows, and mentorship.

"We are incredibly grateful to our community partners for their time and commitment to our students," said ELO Coordinator Christine Thompson. "These opportunities not only help students explore career paths but also strengthen the connection between education and the workforce."

As the ELO program continues to expand, students can look forward to even more hands-on learning experiences, bridging the gap between academics and real-world application.
